The Baboonians or the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Mary ( Latin : Congregatio Filiorum Mariae Immaculatae , abbreviation : CFMI ) are a Roman Catholic brotherhood . They were founded on August 11, 1847 by the blessed Lodovico Pavoni (1784–1849).

In the years between 1819 and 1849, a so-called “workers' brotherhood” was initially established under the direction of the priest Lodovico Pavoni, but this was not recognized by the church. In 1821 Pavoni opened an educational facility for young people and expanded it into a youth hostel . In 1825 he founded the first religious community of priests and brothers, which set itself the task of educating young people and helping them with training. In 1843 this community received from Pope Gregory XVI. authorization to work in the diocese of Brescia . On October 11, 1847, the "Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Mary" was founded. To distinguish them from other congregations with the same name, they are referred to as "baboons". On December 8, 1847, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception , Lodovico and other friars made their profession .

Tasks and content

The baboons want to give a testimony of charity and offer an evangelical and fraternal lifestyle. To this end, they live in family communities that are supposed to characterize the simple and friendly spirit of the family. Your area of ​​responsibility consists mainly in the Christian education and training of young people. To do this, they make use of pastoral care and catechesis . The order members work closely with the local church .

The congregation is now divided into the provinces of Spain , Italy and Brazil and today consists of 34 parishes and institutions. In Europe they operate in Italy and Spain, in Latin America they have facilities in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico . In Africa there is one facility in Eritrea and one in Asia in the Philippines . Until the summer of 2004 there was still a “school for Italian guest worker children” in Stommeln (Germany), which was founded in 1968 and was run by the baboons. The congregation had 208 members worldwide in 2005, of whom 108 were priests. The General House with the Order Council has its seat in Tradate (Italian province Varese ), the current Superior General is Father Lorenzo Agosti. The head office with the secretariat and the legal department is located in Rome .
