Marie Guillemette Émilie de Rodat (German also Maria Wilhelmina Ämilia de Rodat ; born September 6, 1787 at Druelle Castle ( France ), † September 19, 1852 in Villefranche-de-Rouergue ) was a French religious sister , mystic and founder of the order. She was canonized in 1950 .

Life

Émilie de Rodat grew up with her grandmother and was a nun in Villefranche from the age of 18 . In 1815, after some dissatisfaction, she decided to work as a teacher for poor children. With three helpers, she began teaching and tutoring the first children in her room. That was the beginning of the congregation of the " Sisters of the Holy Family of Villefranche " founded by her in 1816 . Over time, the work expanded to caring for unhappy women, orphans, and the elderly. Mystical tendencies, which had hardly been recognized during her lifetime, were very pronounced in her. When she died of cancer in 1852, she had set up 38 institutions as a religious superior.

Canonization and devotion

Pope Pius XII she beatified on June 9, 1940 , the canonization , also by Pius XII, followed on April 23, 1950. Her ecclesiastical feast day is September 19.

In Toulouse , a street was named after her. The high school founded by Émilie de Rodat in 1835 is called "Collège-Lycée Emilie de Rodat". The Marienschule in Bielefeld and the Eichenschule Scheeßel maintain a partnership with this school .

In Villefranche-de-Rouergue a chapel was named after her in her honor. The life story that she left behind in writing is one of the most important religious testimonies.
