The St. Frances of Rome , civic Francesca Ponziani born, Francesca Bussa de 'Buxis de' Leoni , (* 1384 in Rome , † March 9, 1440 in Rome) was a Christian founder of the order and a mystic .

Life

She lived all her life in a palace near Trastevere . Even as a child, Franziska was drawn to religious life. As an antidote, it ordered the father, a member of the noble family Bussa de'Buxis de'Leoni , with eleven years the marriage . She was married in 1395 to Lorenzo de Ponziani, commander of the papal troops of Rome. She was the wife and mother of six children for 40 years. The Roman church was then in a neglected state. It was the time of the Western Schism with two, sometimes three popes. Rome was partially destroyed, wolves roamed the city, sheep grazed in St. Peter's Basilica, the plague sought its victims. Franziska herself lost two of her children to the plague epidemic.

Franziska's longing was for life in the monastery. First she made a part of her palace into a hospital and looked after the plague sufferers (1417-1418). 1436 her husband died; she became a nun and immediately superior of the Compagnia delle Oblate del Monastero Olivetano di S. Maria Nuova , founded by her in Santa Maria Nuova on August 15, 1425 , an order of charitable noble women according to the rule of St. Benedict . The order was confirmed by Pope Eugene IV in 1433 . In the same year she acquired the Tor de'Specchi building complex below the Capitol , where the order is still based today.

Franziska was buried in a glass coffin in the Church of Santa Maria Nuova after several exhumations (1638, 1869). This church was later renamed Santa Francesca Romana after her . 1608 was from Paul V canonised .

Antonio Caldara composed the oratorio Il trionfo della castità ovvero Oratorio per S. Francesca Romana (The Triumph of Chastity or the Oratorio for St. Francis of Rome), which was first performed in Rome in 1710.
