Antonio Maria Zaccaria
Antonio Maria Zaccaria (* 1502 in Cremona ; † July 5, 1539 there ) was the founder of the Barnabite order . He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Zaccaria studied medicine in Pavia and Padua and then worked as a young doctor with the poor of Cremona, where Battista da Crema influenced him. In 1528 Zaccaria was ordained a priest. In 1530 he became chaplain to Countess Ludovica Torelli in Milan , who helped him found the order and the female branch of the Angelica . In 1533 Pope Clement VII recognized the Barnabites . Zaccaria traveled all over northern Italy as a preacher on his religious mission . His innovations in the field of Catholic customs and rites impressed the faithful, but were received with suspicion by some church authorities. He died on July 5, 1539 in Cremona and was buried in Milan.
Zaccaria was highly venerated by the people after his death, which led to his canonization in 1897 . He is depicted in religious dress with a lily , a chalice with a host and a cross . His feast day is July 5th, the day of his death.
