Countess Ludovica Torelli von Guastalla (* 1500 in Guastalla ; † 1569 ibid) was the founder of religious women's associations.

Life

She was the daughter of the Italian Count of Guastalla and widowed for the second time at the age of 27. In 1529 she received spiritual instruction from Battista da Crema . She worked with Antonio Maria Zaccaria , the founder of the Barnabites , and founded the first women's monastery of this order, the "Angeliche". In 1538 she renounced her county and her castles under the adopted name "Paula" and devoted herself to the task of bringing women closer to religious life. Torelli founded a school for young noble women in Milan in 1557 , which she entrusted the Jesuits with running.
