Hugo von Grenoble ( French Hugues , Italian Ugo ; * 1053 in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère near Valence, † April 1, 1132 in Grenoble ) was a French bishop . He was canonized in 1134 ; his feast day is April 1st.

Vita

Hugo was born as a child of the pious noble family of Châteauneuf; his father Odilo was a soldier. His parents chose Hugo for a vision for a spiritual career. Although he was still a layman at the time , he was made canon of the Cathedral of Valence . In 1079 he accompanied the cardinal legate Hugo to the Council of Avignon . There he was chosen by the canons of Grenoble as Bishop of Grenoble to carry out the Gregorian reforms . The legate donated him the priestly ordination and shortly afterwards accompanied him to his episcopal ordination , which was made in 1080 by Pope Gregory VII. , In Rome.

Bishop Hugo fought against simony , which under his predecessor had assumed such proportions that he was excommunicated . After two years Hugo entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu , which was part of the reform of Cluny , because he was overwhelmed with the task of leading the diocese of Grenoble . After a year, the Pope learned of the neglect of the diocese and ordered Hugo to continue his duties as bishop.

Up to the end of the 11th century Hugo was in dispute with Count Guigues III. von Albo on the possession of church lands in Grésivaudan , a valley in the French Alps . Hugo claimed that the count had usurped the land with the help of Bishop Mallen of Grenoble . The dispute was settled in 1099. The count agreed to cede the area, while Hugo submitted to his authority.

Hugo supported the founding of the monastery Saint-Martin de Misère in what is now Montbonnot-Saint-Martin by regular canons and in 1084 St. Bruno , who may have been his teacher, when the Carthusian Order was founded . After a vision in which he saw seven Carthusians under a banner with seven stars, he allowed a group of seven monks to settle in the valley of the Chartreuse . Tradition has it that Hugo adopted much of the monks' way of life for his own during the later visitations to the Grand Chartreuse .

The bishop also promoted the founding of the Chalais monastery , from which an independent order developed with the Chalaisians . He also promoted the first crusade and fought the antipope Anaklet II.

Adoration

Only two years after Hugo's death in 1132, Pope Innocent II canonized him . His relics were burned in June 1562 during the Huguenot Wars by François de Beaumont and the Huguenots on Notre-Dame-Platz in Grenoble; smaller relics are in the Parkminster Charterhouse dedicated to him . The Roman titular church of Sant'Ugo and the parish church of Saint-Hugues next to the cathedral of Grenoble are also subordinate to Hugo's patronage .

presentation

Although Hugo never belonged to the Carthusian order, he is often depicted in the white hooded robe of the Carthusian monks.
