Maud is the Germanic form of Mathilde , whose meaningful meaning can be translated as “strength in battle” ( maht - the Germanic term for strength, strength; hild , hiltja for battle). Especially in the United States, the original matronym as a first name for girls has enjoyed growing popularity since the 1984 film Splash . There are also Maddison and Madisyn variants .
