The name goes back to the Old High German words maht (power, strength) and hiltja (fight). He could therefore be interpreted as a “powerful heroine” or “strong fighter”.

The name has been widespread since the Middle Ages because of the veneration for Mathilde the saint (around 895–968), wife of King Heinrich I of East Franconia . The name was revived by the knight poetry of the 18th and 19th centuries. His best placement between 1890 and 2007 was in 1900 with 37th place among the most common female first names in Germany. The name variants Mathilda and Matilda became increasingly popular between 1999 and 2010. In 2010 they were number 52 of the most common first names for newborn girls in Germany.
