Mathilde Beckmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathilde Beckmann (born February 5, 1904 in Ohlstadt , † March 30, 1986 in Jacksonville ), born von Kaulbach , called Quappi , was a German singer.

Life

Beckmann was the youngest daughter of the painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach and his second wife, the violin virtuoso Frieda Scotta. In 1925 she became the second wife of Max Beckmann . For this reason, she turned down an offer from the Dresden State Opera . The nickname Quappi , which is actually a reference to her original surname, was given to her by Henriette von Motesiczky (and not, as can sometimes be read, from Beckmann). Her husband portrayed her many times over the next few years. She went into exile with Max Beckmann in Amsterdam in 1937 and lived with him in the USA from 1947. After his death in 1950, she administered his estate and lived in New York City until her death .
