Mathilde of Friesland

Mathilde von Friesland (* around 1024, † 1044 ) was a queen of France in the 11th century.

Mathilde was an East Franconian noblewoman of high birth. Her parents were probably Margrave Liudolf von Friesland and his wife Gertrude von Egisheim from the Brunones clan . This filiation cannot be proven by the source, but it is derived from the multiple recurring name Mathildes as the neptem of the Roman-German emperor Heinrich III. opened up, who in turn would have been a half-brother of Liudolf and thus her uncle. She would also have been a niece of Bishop Bruno von Toul on her mother's side, who was named Leo IX in 1049 . was elected Pope.

Her marriage to the West Franconian-French King Heinrich I was agreed upon in a meeting with him in Ivois, Lorraine in 1034 by Emperor Conrad II , who was probably her grandfather by marriage. His own daughter, who was also called Mathilde and who was also engaged to the king of West Franconia, had died shortly before . At the time of their marriage, Mathilde was only ten years old, but there is no doubt that the marriage was consummated shortly after the wedding. She gave birth to a daughter around 1040, but the mother and daughter died shortly after each other in 1044. Mathilde was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Denis , but her tomb has not survived.

After her death, Henry I married Anna of Kiev for the second time .
