Brun I. of Braunschweig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brun I. von Braunschweig (* 960–980; † around 1014) from the tribe of the Brunones was Count of Braunschweig , which he founded, and Count in Derlingau and Northern Thuringia .

Life

Brun's parents were probably Count Brun in Derlingau and Hildeswinde, the daughter of Count Wichmann II. In 990 he supported Mieszko I of Poland in his campaign against Boleslav of Bohemia . After the death of Otto III. , the last king of the Otton family , he tried in 1002 to assert a right to the German royal crown. However, since Bishop Bernward von Hildesheim in particular campaigned for the election of Heinrich of Bavaria , he did not succeed in this project.

Due to the death of his ancestor Brun , the Duchy of Saxony fell to Otto the Illustrious , whose descendants rose to the kingship. As a result, the Brunones lost more and more influence. Therefore, Brun openly opposed the Bishop of Hildesheim.

Around the year 1003/1004 he married Gisela , the daughter of Duke Hermann II of Swabia and later wife of Emperor Conrad II, with whom he had several children: a son Liudolf (* 1003; † 23 April 1038), one Daughter, the Thiemo II. Count von Formbach , and Gisela (* around 1005), who married Berthold, the Count of Sangerhausen.

Brun was slain in his own house by Milo, Count von Ammensleben .
