Mathilde Raven (born February 16, 1817 as Mathilde Beckmann in Meppen , † November 1902 in Dresden ) was a German writer .

Life

Born as the daughter of a Hanoverian civil servant in Meppen, she spent her first school days there. After training in Münster, she moved to live with her parents in Osnabrück. In 1849 she married the lawyer Karl Raven, to whom she had been engaged for six years. In 1853 Mathilde Raven followed her husband to Celle, who worked there as a lawyer. In 1870, after the death of her husband, she moved to Leer . She later lived in Berlin, Bremen and finally in Dresden.

Mathilde Raven wrote entertainment novels for an educated middle class audience. She processed both contemporary and historical fabrics. In her contemporary novels (like Shiny Prospects ) she advocated civic virtues and educational ideals, which she contrasted with aristocratic values. Some of her historical novels deal with figures from (Frisian) regional history such as Quade Foelke or Elisabeth von Ungnad (a lady-in-waiting of Julianes von Hessen-Darmstadt ). In the 1860s she defended the Bismarck-friendly policies of Rudolf von Bennigsen and the German National Association in pamphlets . The Westphalian Literature Archive in Hagen manages Mathilde Raven's literary estate .
