Mathilde Marie Auguste Viktorie Leopoldine Karoline Luise Franziska Josepha von Sachsen (born March  19, 1863 in Dresden ; † March 27, 1933 there ) was a Saxon princess.

Life

Princess Mathilde of Saxony was the third child of King George of Saxony and his wife Maria Anna of Braganza and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Infanta of Portugal . She was the older sister of the last King of Saxony, Friedrich August III. of Saxony.

According to her father's plans, Mathilde was to be married to Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary , who, however, married Princess Stephanie of Belgium .

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este , who later became the Austrian heir to the throne, also refused to marry the Saxon princess out of love for Sophie Chotek von Chotkowa , which upset the relationship between the Kingdom of Saxony and Austria . The situation only eased when the young Archduke Otto Franz Joseph of Austria married a sister of Mathilde, Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony . The Austrian Emperor Karl I.

Between 1890 and 1901 Princess Mathilde took lessons from the Dresden painter and illustrator Alfred Diethe . In the following years she painted several landscapes and scenes from court life in Pillnitz . 24 of them were published as large-format prints by Römmler & Jonas . Other paintings appeared on postcards for charity. In the Nebelschützer Kirche St. Martin hangs a saint of Martin von Tours made by Mathilde.

Mathilde died unmarried on March 27, 1933 at the age of 70. She is buried in the New Crypt of the Catholic Court Church in Dresden.

In the estate of the princess there are colored sheets from the Saxon Court: 24 three-color sheets after original oil paintings of Her Royal Highness Mathilde, Duchess of Saxony, for the benefit of the Maria Anna Children's Hospital , Dresden: Römmler & Jonas , around 1903.
