Caroline was the eldest daughter of Duke Ferdinand of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla from his marriage to Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria .

Princess Caroline married on April 22, 1792 in Parma ( per procurationem ) and on May 9, 1792 in Dresden (in person), Prince Maximilian of Saxony , the youngest brother of Elector Friedrich August III. Since all of Maximilian's older brothers, both Princes Karl and Joseph of Saxony, who died at a young age, as well as Elector Friedrich August and Elector Prince Anton , had no viable male descendants, Maximilian was second in line to the throne of the Electorate in 1796 and later Kingdom of Saxony .

Princess Caroline died in Dresden in 1804 at the age of only 33 and was buried in the Wettiner crypt of the Catholic Court Church.
