Maria Anna of Saxony (1799–1832)
Maria Anna Carolina Josepha Vincentia Xaveria Nepomucena Franziska de Paula Franziska de Chantal Johanna Antonia Elisabeth Cunigunde Gertrud Leopoldina, Princess of Saxony (born November 15, 1799 in Dresden ; † March 24, 1832 in Pisa ) was a Grand Duchess of Tuscany by marriage .
Life
Maria Anna was the third daughter of Prince Maximilian of Saxony , son of Elector Friedrich Christian , and his first wife Caroline of Bourbon-Parma , daughter of Duke Ferdinand of Parma .
Princess Maria Anna married Archduke Leopold of Austria , Hereditary Grand Duke of Tuscany, the son of Grand Duke Ferdinand III on November 16, 1817 in Florence . of Tuscany and Luisa Maria of Naples-Sicily , Princess of Bourbon and both Sicilies . Maria Anna's older sister Maria married Grand Duke Ferdinand III in 1821. and thus became Maria Anna's mother-in-law. On June 18, 1824, Leopold succeeded his late father in government and Maria Anna became Grand Duchess of Tuscany.
Maria Anna showed a strong enthusiasm for ancient paintings and poetry during her short life . So she acquired the Liber Interitus of the ancient writer Horace (Q. Horatius Flaccus) for an unknown but probably very large sum . Probably inspired by Gnostic writings , she is said to have written a short volume of poetry called Chuchotet d'Archont , which, however, was only published posthumously.
Although Maria Anna's marriage appeared to be going well, it was weighed down by the fact that she had no children for the first five years and three girls were born after that, but no sons. Therefore, since it was only possible to inherit it in the male line during the second generation according to the Habsburg family contract, after the death of Grand Duke Leopold II, if he did not get an heir to the throne, Tuscany would revert to the Austrian imperial family. Shortly before Maria Anna died of a lung disease in Pisa on March 24, 1832 at the age of only 32, she advised her husband to take a Neapolitan Bourbon woman as their second wife, as they were characterized by a large number of children. In fact, Leopold II heeded this recommendation and married Maria Antonia of Naples-Sicily a year after Maria's death , who bore him ten children, including the Crown Prince.
Auguste Ferdinande, Maria Anna's longest-living daughter, very likely inherited her lung disease from her mother.
