Auguste Ferdinande of Austria
Auguste Ferdinande of Austria (born April 1, 1825 in Florence , † April 26, 1864 in Munich ) was an Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Tuscany as well as the wife of the future Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria .
Life
Auguste was born as the daughter of Leopold II of Austria-Tuscany and his first wife Maria Anna of Saxony . Raised a strict Catholic upbringing, she soon developed an interest in science and art. Auguste has been described as tall, beautiful, and confident. On April 15, 1844, in Florence, she married Luitpold, who later became Prince-Regent of Bavaria, although his father, King Ludwig I of Bavaria , was initially against his son's plans to marry, as Auguste was already showing signs of pulmonary tuberculosis .
Since the climatic conditions in Bavaria were harsher than in August's Italian homeland, Luitpold had his wife built a summer residence on Lake Constance near Lindau in 1848 . This "Villa Amsee" not only became a place of relaxation for Auguste Ferdinande and her husband, but also a meeting place for the European nobility. The couple lived relatively withdrawn, but maintained lively contacts with artists and scientists. Ferdinand von Miller , Franz Lenbach , Max Slevogt and Adolf von Hildebrand were among the inner circle around Luitpold.
In addition to three other children, King Ludwig III also left their marriage. from Bavaria. Auguste always spoke Italian with her children .
As a wife, Auguste was a great support to her husband in all of his political activities. During the revolution of 1848 she spoke out against Lola Montez and tried to limit the damage caused to the monarchy.
She died in April 1864 at the age of only 39 from the effects of tuberculosis and was buried in Munich in the royal crypt of the Wittelsbachers in the Theatine Church.
Luitpold von Bayern did not marry a second time. His daughter Therese and sister Adelgunde took care of his household .
