Adelgunde Auguste of Bavaria completely: Adelgunde Auguste Charlotte Caroline Elisabeth Amalie Marie Sophie Luise (born March 19, 1823 in Würzburg , † October 28, 1914 in Munich ) was a princess of Bavaria and from 1846 to 1859 Duchess of Modena .

Life

Franz V, Duke of Modena, and his wife Adelgunde of Bavaria

Adelgunde was a daughter of the future King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen . She received a religious-Catholic education.

Nobles from France, Coburg and Nassau applied for her hand. However, on March 30, 1842, she married Archduke Franz V of Austria-Este , a son of Archduke Franz IV of Austria-Este and Maria Beatrice di Savoia , Princess of Savoy. Francis V had been the last ruling Duke of Modena-Este since 1846 and had to abdicate in 1859 due to the Italian unification.

After the death of her husband in November 1875, Adelgunde lived alternately in the Palais Modena in Vienna , in the Munich Residenz and in Wildenwart Castle in Chiemgau, which she has owned since 1862 . When her brother Luitpold took over the regency in Bavaria in 1886, she became the gray eminence at court as "Aunt Modena" , had great influence on her brother and took over all family and social obligations of a first lady in the state, especially from 1889 after the death of the Queen Mother Marie . As a feared personality, Adelgunde was viewed with suspicion by Bavarian ministers. In addition, she also promoted the influence of the Viennese court in Munich.

Adelgunde died in 1914 at the age of 91 and is buried in Ferdinand's crypt in Vienna.
