Ernst Friedrich II of Saxony-Hildburghausen (* December 17, 1707 in Hildburghausen ; † August 13, 1745 ibid) from the Ernestine line of the Wettins , was Duke of Saxony-Hildburghausen .

Life

Ernst Friedrich II. Was a son of Duke Ernst Friedrich I of Saxony-Hildburghausen (1681-1724) from his marriage to Sophia Albertine (1683-1742), daughter of Count Georg Ludwig I of Erbach-Erbach .

When his father died, still a minor, his mother took over the guardianship from 1724 to 1728. They knew how to cut the number of taxes levied in the meantime by half through austerity measures.

The prince was trained in Jena , Geneva and Utrecht and made a trip to France with his brother Ludwig Friedrich in 1722, where he attended the coronation celebrations of King Louis XV. participated. Ernst Friedrich took office in 1728 and, despite his mother's efforts, took over a state that was still heavily in debt. In 1729 he had to close the illustrious grammar school, which Duke Ernst had founded in 1715, due to lack of money . In 1730, at the intercession of the Duchess mother, the Jews were granted a special memorial protection letter, which gave them extended rights. In 1732 Ernst Friedrich granted exiles from Salzburg the right to settle in the country.

On a trip to the court of Emperor Charles VI. in Vienna, he was appointed Imperial Colonel Sergeant in 1733 on the intercession of his great-uncle Joseph Friedrich . In 1743 he received an infantry regiment as lieutenant general from Elector Karl Theodor . Emperor Karl VII then appointed him General Feldzeugmeister .

Always ailing in body and mind, he was helpless in the face of the problems in the duchy. The country's debt was now so high that all government revenue no longer even covered interest.

On June 10, 1726, in Fürstenau, he married Caroline (1700–1758), daughter of Count Philipp Karl von Erbach-Fürstenau (1677–1736), with whom he had the following children:
