Mathilde of Swabia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathilde von Schwaben (* October 1048 probably in Pöhlde ; † 12 May 1060 probably in Goslar , probably also buried there) was the wife of Rudolf von Rheinfelden, Duchess of Swabia. She was the third daughter of Emperor Heinrich III. from his second marriage to Agnes de Poitou .

Life

Mathilde was the third daughter of Emperor Heinrich III. and the Empress Agnes was probably born in Pöhlde in October 1048.

In 1057 Rudolf von Rheinfelden was made Duke of Swabia by Empress Agnes, and it was on this occasion that the engagement to Mathilde took place. Rudolf is said to have obtained this mortgage and engagement through a kidnapping of Mathilde. The two married at the end of 1059, but Mathilde probably died in Goslar as early as May 1060, where she was probably buried in the St. Simon and Judas monastery.

It can no longer be clarified whether Mathilde is, as is sometimes assumed, the mother of Duke Berthold of Swabia .
