Mathilde I. (Essen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathilde I († January 7 of an unknown year) was possibly the fifth abbess of the Essen monastery .

Mathilde I is said to have been abbess from 907 to 910. The Essen necrology secures the anniversary of her death. The early modern Essen abbess catalogs assign them to the relatives of Queen Mathilde . She was the successor of Wicburg and the predecessor of Hadwig .

An essay by Tobias Nüssel, published in 2011, denies that Mathilde, who died on January 7th, was abbess in Essen in the 10th century, and justifies this with her absence in all other Essen memorial traditions.
