from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathilde von Haldensleben (also Mathilda ; lived around 993) was the wife of the Slav prince Pribislaw and later an abbess in Magdeburg .

mention

Thietmar von Merseburg reported in his chronicle :

“During these days the nun Mathilde, a daughter of Margrave Dietrich, married the Slav Pribislaw. Later she held Bolilut, the illegitimate commander of Brandenburg Castle , in such harsh imprisonment that she could neither prepare for the birth of the Lord nor other celebrations through proper fasting or celebrate with feast. There she gave birth to a son whom she raised in mourning; but later she achieved her liberation from this misery and despite her unworthiness an abbey in Magdeburg. Her husband had previously perished on December 28th by the twin brothers Ugio and Uffiko. "

Life

Mathilde was a daughter of the Margrave of the Nordmark Dietrich von Haldensleben and possibly a daughter of Count Lothar von Walbeck (?). She married an important Slav Pribislaw, who was probably a prince in Brandenburg or a candidate for the Slavic rule of the castle. Her sister Oda was the wife of the Polish prince Mieszko .

Probably in late 993 (or 994), she became a prisoner of the new Slavic ruler Boliliut after her husband was killed. Mathilde gave birth to her son there. It is not known when she came out of captivity, probably in 997 at the latest, when King Otto III. once again briefly penetrated the Hevellerland .

Thereafter, Mathilde was abbess in the St. Laurentiustift in Magdeburg. The year of her death is unknown.
