Pribislaw (around 990)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pribislaw (Latin Prebislavus ; † December 28, 993 or 994 ) was a Slavic prince in Brandenburg .

mention

Pribislaw was mentioned in the chronicle of Thietmar von Merseburg , as sclavus Prebislavus without title. His brother Liudolf was a priest , his wife Mathilda von Haldensleben a daughter of the Margrave of the Nordmark Dietrich .

Life

Pribislaw must have had a prominent position in Brandenburg, since Margrave Dietrich only married his daughters to the most important princes of his time. Another daughter was married to the Polish ruler Mieszko . The marriage of Mathilde to Pribislaw meant a safeguarding of the rule in the North Mark around the Brandenburg for both sides. Whether and when Pribislaw was ruler in Brandenburg is unknown, as Thietmar does not provide any information about it. This would be possible for the time before 983 as a Slavic prince under the margrave, it would also be possible that he only had inheritance rights to a rule without actually exercising them.

Pribislaw was killed on December 28th, probably 983 by two Saxon twin brothers Ubio and Uffiko. The background is unknown, either in battles for Brandenburg Castle or in a personal feud. His wife Mathilde was imprisoned by the ruler Boliliut in Brandenburg, where she gave birth to her son. Brother Liudolf temporarily took off his priestly robe to fight the Germans, but then became a priest again in Saxon captivity.
