history

Chalaisians and Carthusians

In 1101 Hugo von Grenoble founded the Benedictine monastery Chalais east of Voreppe , which was elevated to an abbey in 1124 and opened a priory in Laverq (today: Méolans-Revel ) in 1135 . 1142 took over monks of Chalais the south Crots located monastery Boscodon . In 1148 they were given an order comparable to the Cistercian Carta Caritatis . The Chalais Religious Congregation was brought into being. Over time, all Chalaisian monasteries passed into the hands of other orders: Chalais became a Carthusian monastery in 1304 , with Boscodon taking over the role of the mother monastery of the Chalaisians. Chalais survived as a Charterhouse (first independently, from 1582 as a branch of the Grande Chartreuse) until 1791.

Dominicans

In 1844 Henri Lacordaire made the place the first study monastery of the Dominicans, which in 1859 moved to Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume . Chalais served as the Dominican retirement home until 1881, when it was sold. In 1963 the Dominicans of Oullins (near Lyon) gave up their monastery, which had existed since 1868, and moved to Chalais. In 1966 they were followed by the Dominicans of Chinon . They brought their tradition of baking cookies with them, which the community (approx. 12 sisters) still entertains today.

building

The 12th century church, which is similar to the early Cistercian churches, has been a listed building since 1992.
