Life
Johannes Baptist de La Salle came from a noble family of lawyers and was the eldest son of Louis de la Salle and Nicolle de Moet de Brouillet. According to his father's wishes, he should also become a lawyer, but Jean decided on a spiritual career. On January 7, 1667 he became canon in Reims, studied theology in the seminary of Saint Sulpice in Paris from 1670 and was ordained a priest on April 9, 1678 . 1680 he became a doctor of theology doctorate .
In 1679 he founded a free school for the poor and in 1681 took on some poor school teachers in his house. He gave up his position as canon in 1683 and founded the Congregation of Brothers of Christian Schools ( School Brothers ) on May 25, 1684 . As a result, he created secondary schools, Sunday schools, educational institutions for neglected young people and teachers' seminars. In 1688 he opened the first schools in Paris. What was new was that the lessons were not given individually, but as part of a class. The language of instruction was not Latin , but French . These innovations led to a change in the entire French teaching system.
In 1692 he set up the first novitiate for the school brothers in Vaugirard and compiled the rules of the order until 1698 .
