Luis Beltrán Exach (born January 1, 1526 in Valencia , Spain ; † October 9, 1581 ), also known as Ludwig Bertrand , is a Spanish saint from the order of the Dominicans . He was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671 .

Life

Luis Beltrán was born on January 1, 1526 in Valencia to Luis Beltrán and Ángela Exach. He entered the 1544 Convention one of the Dominicans in Valencia. Like many other Dominicans, he went to America as a missionary , where he worked in the region of the lower Río Magdalena after landing in Cartagena de Indias . In 1568 he became prior of the Santo Domingo Convention in Santa Fe de Bogotá . The cruelty, greed and the encroachments of the encomenderos , the royal representatives for the conquest of the colonial territories and the oppression of the Indians, were the main obstacles that he had to overcome in his work. When he realized that there was nothing he could do about these evils, he asked for a transfer to Europe.

There are many stories and legends about the conflicts of this religious with the conquistadores who tried several times to assassinate him.

When he returned to Valencia, he was welcomed with great friendliness. As in his religious youth, he was entrusted with the office of novice master . He put the following inscription on the door of his cell : If I wanted to please people, I would not be a servant of Jesus Christ . After many illnesses, which he understood as a process of purification by God, he died on October 9, 1581, a year before Saint Teresa of Ávila , with whom he was in correspondence. Again and again he repeated the words of St. Augustine : Burn, cut and punish here, Lord, so that you will forgive me forever. Pope Paul V beatified him in 1608 and Alexander VII declared him patron of the Nuevo Reino de Granada . He was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. Its festival is celebrated on October 9th.
