Josep Manyanet i Vives ( Spanish : José Manyanet y Vives ) (born January 7, 1833 in Tremp , Spain , † December 17, 1901 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish school priest and founder of the order . He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2004 .

Life

Josep M. was born into a large Christian family . At the age of five, his mother donated the boy's life to Our Lady Mary . He completed his school education and his studies with the Piarists in Barbastro and in the seminaries of the Urgell diocese in Lleida and Urgell . He was ordained a priest on April 9, 1859 . In the next few years he worked in the episcopal ordinariate of Urgell in several responsible positions. Only later did he choose pastoral activity and intended to found two religious communities. Josep M. suffered from mental disorders throughout his life, which ultimately weakened him after long hard work. He died on December 17, 1901 and was buried in the chapel , the center of his work, at the Nazareth Family School he founded . He shaped his entire pastoral life in the spirit of the Holy Family of Nazareth .

Founding of orders

In 1864 his diocesan bishop approved the Congregation of the Sons of the Holy Family , the clerical members were commissioned to promote Christian education and educate young people in the faith. In 1874 Josep M. founded the mission daughters of the Holy Family . Both Institutes of Consecrated Life now have offices in several European countries, in North and South America, and in Africa .

Life's work

Josep Manyanet wanted the life of the Holy Family of Nazareth journalistic represent and became the editor of the magazine "La Sagrada Familia" . He inspired and supported the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí to build a cathedral in Barcelona. The Atonement Church of the Holy Family (" Sagrada Família ") is still under construction.

Manyanet wrote several articles, letters, books, and pamphlets that dealt with Christian education, but were also used as instructions for schools. The most famous school he founded in Barcelona in 1895 is the “School of Nazareth”. He was also the founding father of the “Home of the Holy Family”, which later became the Residencia Universitaria Josep Manyanet student residence in Barcelona. His book Preciosa joya de familia (The family a priceless gem) , published in 1899 , became a guide for the Christian family and for the upbringing of children. With the meditative description El espíritu de la Sagrada Familia (The Spirit of the Holy Family) he presented a guideline for religious orders by explaining the identity of the Holy Family for mission in society and the Church . In 1991 Josep Manyanet's Collected Works was published in Madrid.

canonization

The process of canonization was formally inaugurated in 1956 and ended in 1982 with the recognition of a healing miracle . In 1984 Pope John Paul II interceded and beatified him . The canonization took place on May 16, 2004 in Rome , in his sermon the Pope stated:

“The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send you in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything that I have told you (Jn 14:26). From the beginning the Paraclete has inspired men and women who have called to mind and spread the truth revealed by Jesus. One of them was St. Josep Manyanet, a true apostle of the family. By following the School of Nazareth, he carried out his plan of personal holiness and devoted himself with heroic zeal to the mission entrusted to him by the Holy Spirit. "
