Teresa Jornet y Ibars

Teresa Jornet y Ibars , religious name Teresa of Jesus OCDS, (born January 9, 1843 in Aitona, Catalonia , Spain , † August 26, 1897 in Liria (near Valencia ), Spain) was a Spanish nun and founder of the congregation of the Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados . Sr. Teresa is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Teresa Jornet y Ibars was the eldest daughter of the farmer Francisco Jornet and his wife Antonia Ibars. In 1872 Sr. Teresa entered the Poor Clares Monastery in Zaragoza , where they the religious name Teresa received. In the same year Sr. Teresa founded the Institute of the Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados (“Little Sister for the Helpless Old”, better known as the Little Sisters of the Poor ) in Barbastro , Aragon , which she directed until her death.

Beatification and Canonization

Her beatification took place on April 27, 1958 by Pope Pius XII. who have favourited canonization on January 27, 1974 by Pope Paul VI. Her feast day in the liturgy is August 26th.
