Walter Kirchschläger

Walter Kirchschläger (born April 27, 1947 in Kamegg / Lower Austria ) is an Austrian theologian and philosopher.

Life

Kirchschläger is the son of the Austrian diplomat, Foreign Minister and Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger and his wife Herma . He grew up in Kamegg , Langenlois and Vienna , where he also graduated . He studied theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the University of Vienna . From 1970 to 1973 he was secretary to Cardinal Franz König, Archbishop of Vienna . In 1972 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on The Satan of the Gospels as a tempter at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna . He was assistant to Jacob Kremer and received his habilitation for Exegesis of the New Testament in Vienna in 1981. In the same year he received the Cardinal Innitzer Prize . From 1980 to 1982 he headed the Vienna Theological Courses and the Correspondence Course for Theological Education.

Kirchschläger was full professor for Exegesis of the New Testament at the Lucerne Faculty of Theology from 1982 until his retirement in 2012 . From 1986 to 1990 he was prefect of studies, from 1990 to 1993 rector of the Lucerne Theological Faculty, which was restructured during his tenure to become the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences with two faculties (theology, humanities). From 1997 to 2000 he was the rector of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, and from 2000 to 2001 he was the founding rector of the University of Lucerne . In 2011 Kirchschläger signed the memorandum Church 2011: A necessary departure .

Kirchschläger has been married to Heidi Kirchschläger, b. Humility, and has four children.
