St. María Guadelupe García Zavala

María Guadalupe García Zavala , also known as Madre Lupita , (born April 27, 1878 in Zapopan , Jalisco , Mexico ; † June 24, 1963 in Guadalajara , Mexico) was a religious sister and founder of the Servants of St. Margareta Maria and the poor . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Maria Guadalupe Zavala's father was a devotional merchant at the pilgrimage church of the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan and María accompanied him to his place of work. At the age of 23, Maria Guadalupe was supposed to marry Gustavo Arreopla, but she decided to live a life of virginity for the sake of heaven and turned to work at the local hospital . As a nurse , she devoted herself to caring for the poor and took care of her patients. On October 13, 1901, she founded the Order of the Servants of St. Margareta Maria and the poor and was elected Superior General. During the Mexican Revolution and the persecution of the Church from 1911 to 1936, the sisters looked after priests and bishops who worked underground . M. Maria Guadalupe died on June 24, 1963 at the age of 85 in Guadalajara.

On October 13, 1961, the religious community, which today has 22 branches in Mexico, Peru , Iceland , Greece and Italy , celebrated Madre Lupita's diamond jubilee . Pope John Paul II beatified M. María Guadalupe García Zavala on April 25, 2004 . At the last consistory of Pope Benedict XVI. on February 11, 2013, he confirmed the completion of the canonization process. Pope Francis canonized M. Maria Guadalupe on May 12, 2013 in Rome .
