Life

Lorenzo was a descendant of the Venetian Giustiniani family , which produced great statesmen, scholars and churchmen. His life was shaped by his very pious mother. After experiencing a religious apparition, he entered a canon monastery in 1400 on the lagoon island of San Giorgio in Alga ; together with the Venetian noblemen Antonio Correr and Gabriele Condulmer, who later became Pope Eugene IV ; In 1406 he was ordained a priest and shortly thereafter prior of the monastery. During this time the monastery was transformed into a congregation of world priests who wanted to live in community. He was venerated by his confreres for his modesty, asceticism, and piety, and he was soon elected general of the congregation. He gave the order new rules and was eager to spread them, so that he was soon seen as the actual founder. After Eugene IV was elected Pope, he appointed Lorenzo bishop of the diocese of Castello , which also included Venice. In 1451 Pope Nicholas V united the diocese of Castello with the Patriarchate of Grado , with the seat being moved to Venice. Giustiniani thus became the first patriarch of Venice, a position he held until his death. His office was recognized by secular and clerical dignitaries; he was venerated as a saint by the people of Venice during his lifetime.

He left behind letters, sermons and ascetic tracts that were printed in Brescia in 1506 , in Paris in 1524 and in Basel in 1560 .

Adoration

On October 16, 1690 he was canonized by Pope Alexander VIII (the Venetian Piero Ottoboni). Pope Innocent XII. included him in the Calendarium Romanum Generale , with September 5th , the day of his ordination as bishop, being used as a holiday.

Because of its rather local importance, it is no longer to be found among the saints who are venerated in the Roman Catholic Church worldwide. His feast day has been moved to January 8, the day he died.

Among other things, ships bear his name.
