The mystic Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld (* around 1150 in Cologne ; † April 7, 1241 or 1252 in the Hoven monastery near Zülpich ) is a Catholic saint from the Premonstratensian order .

Life

Born into a poor family in Cologne Hermann Joseph was twelve years Prämonstratenser - canon at Steinfeld monastery ( Kall ). After training in Mariengaarde (German: Mariengarten) near Hallum ( Ferwerderadiel ), he returned to Steinfeld and was ordained a priest . He then worked as a pastor in Steinfeld and the surrounding area and became sexton of the monastery.

He was best known for his mystical marriage to Mary , the Mother of God , which earned him the nickname Joseph. Even before he was accepted as a canon , he is said to have brought apples as a gift to the statue of Our Lady in the Church of St. Maria in the Capitol in Cologne . Since then he has also been referred to as the "apple saint". Traditionally, apples are regularly placed on the tomb in the basilica in Steinfeld as well as under the statue of Mary in the choir of St. Maria in the Capitol.

Hermann Joseph died while attending pastoral care in the sister monastery in Hoven near Zülpich.

The most important source about the life of St. Hermann Joseph is a vita that a Steinfeld brother, probably the prior at the time , wrote in Latin shortly after the saint's death.

These hymns are attributed to the saint:

  • Jesu dulcis et decore (Hymn to Jesus Christ)

  • O vernantes Christi Rosae (hymn to the companions of St. Ursula of Cologne )

The following writings of Saint Hermann Joseph have been lost:

Adoration

Long venerated as a saint, the canonization was requested in 1626 by Archbishop Ferdinand of Cologne and Emperor Ferdinand II ; officially Hermann Joseph was given saint status on August 11, 1958 by Pope Pius XII. awarded (the public announcement took place in 1960).

Hermann Joseph's grave in Steinfeld Monastery is now a well-known pilgrimage site . He is regarded as the patron saint of watchmakers (because of the corresponding manual skills), mothers and children.

The Hermann-Josef-Brunnen, designed by Wilhelm Albermann , stands on the Cologne Waidmarkt . Here the young Hermann offers the baby Jesus an apple in the arms of Maria.
