Teresa Eustochio Verzeri (German Theresia Eustochium Verzeri ) (born July 31, 1801 in Bergamo , Italy ; † March 3, 1852 in Brescia , Italy) was an Italian nun and founder of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Verzeri Soure) , Italian Figlie del Sacro Coure di Gesú . She was canonized by the Catholic Church in 2001 .

Life

Ignatia Verzeri, her real name, was the daughter of Antonio Verzeri and the Countess Elena Pedrocca-Grumellitrat. In Bergamo she entered the Benedictine monastery of Santa Grata and took the religious name Teresa Eustochio. Because she suffered from epilepsy and depression, she left the monastery. On February 8, 1831, together with the canon Giuseppe Benaglio , she founded the Congregazione delle Figlie del Sacro Cuore di Gesù for Catholic education. The heart of the community's spirituality was devotion to the Sacred Heart .

On October 27, 1946 she was by Pope Pius XII. beatified . She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 10, 2001 . Her feast day in the liturgy is March 3rd.

The congregation founded by Teresa Verzeri had 481 sisters worldwide in 2015. The motherhouse is in Rome.
