Saint Saint Régis

Jean-François Régis (German: Johannes-Franz Régis) SJ (born January 31, 1597 in Fontcouverte , Languedoc , France ; † December 30, 1640 in Lalouvesc , Dauphiné , France) was a French Jesuit , missionary and preacher who served in the Catholic Church is venerated as a saint .

Régis attended a Jesuit college and entered the Jesuit novitiate on December 8, 1616. He was ordained a priest at the age of 31 . He worked in the Languedoc and the neighboring provinces. He dedicated a large part of his life to preaching to the poor in Huguenot- controlled areas of France. His style of preaching is said to have been simple and direct and was well received by the uneducated rural population. He set up a kind of women's shelters for prostitutes and gave them an alternative form of income, for example as lace makers , which is why he is also the patron saint of lace makers . This pastoral care earned him a lot of slander and hatred. Jean Régis also worked with victims of the plague in Toulouse .

Régis founded brotherhoods of the Blessed Sacrament , which raised money and food from the rich for charitable purposes. He died on December 30, 1640 in the small village of Lalouvesc (now in Ardèche ) at a pneumonia . He was on June 16, 1737 by Pope Clement XII. canonized together with Vinzenz von Paul , Katharina von Genoa and Juliana von Falconieri . His Catholic feast day is December 31st.
