Benedetto Menni (baptized name: Angelo Ercole , born March 11, 1841 in Milan , Italy , † April 24, 1914 in Dinan , France ) was an Italian priest and founder of the order. Since 1999 he has been a saint of the Roman Catholic Church and the patron saint of “volunteer helpers”.

Life

Angelo Ercole Menni was born the fifth child and the family had a total of 15 children. After graduating from school, he worked in a bank for a short time. At the age of 19 (1860) he joined the religious order of the Brothers of Mercy of John of God in Lodi near Milan and accepted the name Benedetto . After studying theology and philosophy, he was ordained a priest in Rome in 1866 . On behalf of Pope Pius IX. (1846–1878) he reformed the order on the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America from 1867 . Benedetto was the founder of several religious centers and over 20 hospitals that looked after the sick and elderly. In 1881 he founded the community of the Hospital Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ciempozuelos ( Madrid ) to complement his order with women . In 1909 Benedetto was appointed Apostolic Visitator . In 1911 he was entrusted with the office of Superior General of the Brothers of Mercy, which he resigned in 1912.

His philosophy

Benedetto was an advocate and representative of contemporary care and treatment for the physically ill and mentally disabled. In his opinion, the therapy of these patients also includes art , culture , society and religion . He defended the intellectual climate against all critics and campaigned for the humane dignity of the disabled.

Adoration

His spirituality and the symbolic health and nursing care brought him the name "Prophet of Hospitality". Benedetto Menni was beatified by Pope John Paul II (1878-2005) on April 24, 1985 and canonized on November 21, 1999 . His ecclesiastical feast day is April 24th
