Józef Sebastian Pelczar (born January 17, 1842 in Korczyna , Galicia , † March 28, 1924 in Przemyśl , Poland ) was Bishop of Przemyśl . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Pelczar was ordained a priest on July 17, 1864 and then worked as a professor. He was also well known as a theological and historical author. In 1891 he founded the Order of Our Lady, Queen of the Polish Crown , which is primarily dedicated to the needy, orphans and job seekers. In 1894 Józef Pelczar also founded the community of the Servant Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , which is dedicated to caring for the sick. On February 16, 1899 he was appointed titular bishop of Miletopolis and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Przemyśl. The episcopal ordination donated him on March 19, 1899 Łukasz Solecki , the bishop of Przemyśl. In 1900 he was appointed Bishop of Przemyśl himself. As a spiritual leader, he was particularly charitable to the disadvantaged population.

Pelczar by Pope John Paul II. In 1985 beatified and in 2003 canonized .
