Caterina Volpicelli

Caterina Volpicelli (born January 21, 1839 in Naples ; † December 28, 1894 ibid) was an Italian nun and founder of the Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Caterina Volpicelli ( it . : Ancelle del Sacro Cuore di Caterina Volpicelli) . She was canonized by the Catholic Church .

history

Her family belonged to the upper middle class of Naples. After the contemplative life with the Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament ( it . : Adoratrici del Santissimo Sacramento) did not appeal to her, she took part in the prayer apostolate of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The apostolate of prayer remained her spiritual model throughout her life. Through Fr. Henri Ramière , the great sponsor of this prayer apostolate as editor of the monthly magazine Messager du Cœur de Jésus - Bulletin mensuel de L´Apostolat de la Prière (German: Messenger of the Heart of Jesus - Monthly Bulletin of the Prayer Apostolate), she made contact with the Oblates of the Sacred Heart of Jesus founded by Louise Thérèse de Montaignac de Chauvance . However, she opened no branch of the French Institute, but was based on the advice of the Cardinal - Archbishop of Naples, Sisto Riario Sforza , in 1874, the Institute Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on March 3, 1875, a novitiate. On June 20, 1888, the congregation received a decretum laudis . The final approbation by the Holy See took place on August 9, 1902.

Catherina Volpicelli was beatified on April 29, 2001 by Pope John Paul II . On April 26, 2009 she was by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized. Her feast day in the liturgy is December 28th.
