Marguerite Bays

Marguerite Bays OFS (born September 8, 1815 in La Pierraz , Canton of Friborg , Switzerland , † June 27, 1879 in La Pierraz) was a Swiss Franciscan and mystic . She has been venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church since 2019 .

Life

Marguerite Bays was born the second of six children into a farming family. From an early age she was distinguished by a special piety . She attended school for three years, learned tailoring at the age of 15 and lived with her parents. She attended Holy Mass every day and took part in pilgrimages .

In 1860 she entered the Third Order of the Franciscans as a Terziarin . There she worked in the catechesis of children, looked after the poor, cared for the sick and accompanied the dying on their last journey. She got involved in the mission work founded by Pauline Marie Jaricot and in collecting donations. At the same time she often visited the Cistercian convent in Romont to take part in retreats there .

Healing and stigmatization

In 1853, Marguerite Bays is said to have shown the first signs of cancer. According to the dossier for her canonization, Marguerite Bays was suddenly healed on December 8, 1854, the day Pope Pius IX. with the bull Ineffabilis Deus had proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary . Starting with that day, every Friday she saw wounds similar to those of Christ , and she fell into ecstasy . In 1873 an investigation of the stigmata, ordered by the local bishop , took place.

Worship and canonization

Marguerite Bays died on June 27, 1879. Many people then came to her home in La Pierraz. In 1927, the local bishop of Freiburg, Marius Besson, opened the beatification process. In 1953 his successor, François Charrière , continued the process. In 1987, Bishop Pierre Mamie requested that the dormant proceedings be resumed. A miraculous rescue from mountain distress, which occurred in 1940, and another miracle were ascribed to the invocation of Marguerite Bays:

“During the descent, all four climbers were roped when the girl suddenly slipped, fell into the depths and carried the others with her - except for Marcel [Menétrey], because in this moment of horror he uttered the prayer“ Marguerite Bays ”, and wondrously The rope between him and the others was wisely cut and he was the only one who was saved. ""

Menétrey's grandparents were close friends with Margaretha Bays. On October 29, 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified Marguerite Bays. Her feast day is June 27th .

Another incident led to the canonization : In 1998 a girl was run over by a tractor and survived the accident unharmed. The bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg , Charles Morerod , then initiated the canonization process on May 27, 2014. On January 15, 2019, Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to Marguerite Bays' intercession as the final requirement. The canonization by him took place on October 13, 2019. At the ceremony in front of several thousand believers in St. Peter's Square, at which the Pope canonized four other people ( John Henry Newman , Giuseppina Vannini , Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan and Dulce Lopes Pontes ), there were 300 Swiss nationals, including Bishops Charles Morerod and Felix Gmür and Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter , arrived. Marguerite Bays is the third canonized person from Switzerland after Niklaus von der Flüe and Maria Bernarda Bütler .
