Alfonso of Orozco

Alfonso von Orozco (born October 17, 1500 in Oropesa near Toledo, Spain, † September 19, 1591 ) was a Spanish Augustinian and priest. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Life

Alfonso studied in Talavera de la Reina and at the University of Salamanca . Under the leadership of Thomas von Villanova , he joined the Augustinian order in 1520 and was ordained a priest in 1527 . In 1538 he became prior of the monastery in Soria , after which he was in charge of the branches of Medina del Campo , Seville and Granada . In 1542 the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream and ordered him to write. He worked as a talented and popular writer, popular preacher, teacher and soul guide. Alfonso also worked in prisons and hospitals. His mystical experiences became particularly well known .

Canonization

Alfons was born on January 15, 1882 by Pope Leo XIII. Beatified and canonized on May 19, 2002 by Pope John Paul II .
