Sophie Barat
( Magdalena ) Sophie Barat (* December 12 or 13, 1779 in Joigny in Burgundy ; † May 25, 1865 in Paris ) was the founder of the Catholic women's order of the Sacré Cœur Sisters , known as the Order of Education.
Life
She was 10 years old when the French Revolution broke out. She received her first school education at home: her older brother Louis, a deacon in her home town, taught her - unusual for girls of her time - like his students at grammar school in Latin , literature , natural sciences and mathematics .
The brother escaped the guillotine threatening him as a priest and went to Paris with Sophie in 1805 . Here she lived with three other young women who earned their living by teaching. From this community the Sacré-Cœur-Order finally developed . Sophie took the religious name Magdalena . From 1806 until her death she was Superior General of the Order.
Sophie Barat founded branches in various locations in Europe , the USA , Chile , Cuba , Canada and Algeria to help children and young people in need. A total of 122 branches in 16 countries go back to them. One of the main tasks was to negotiate with ecclesiastical and secular authorities to enable the institutional framework and buildings for boarding schools and schools for the poor .
Sophie Barat invested her income from the boarding schools attended by the daughters of the upper classes in so-called free schools. There children from the less privileged classes received free lessons. In addition, she founded a number of other institutions.
At the time of her death, there were 3,500 sisters in her religious community.
aftermath
Today the Sacré Cœur Order has almost 3,000 sisters in 41 countries. They are still essentially concerned with the upbringing and education of girls and women.
Magdalena Sophie Barat in 1908 beatified and in 1925 canonized . Her feast day is May 25th.
A few schools were named after Sophie Barat, the most famous being the Sophie Barat School in Hamburg.
