School for the poor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schools for the poor were first established in the 16th century for educational institutions for children from poor families. The school fees accounted for destitute parents. The schools were financed either privately or by the state.

In Catholic countries they were very often subordinate to religious orders . With the introduction of compulsory schooling , many of them lost their right to exist because of the free elementary schools . Well -known schools for the poor were the Francke Foundations , the Pestalozzi Schools and the Wehrli Schools . In England the so-called rag schools existed.
