Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński

Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński (born November 1, 1822 in Wojutyn near Łuck , † September 17, 1895 in Krakow ) was Archbishop of Warsaw . He was on October 11, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized ; his feast day is September 17th.

Life

Feliński studied in Moscow and Paris mathematics . When the Wielkopolska uprising broke out in the Prussian partition in 1848 , he went to the Grand Duchy of Poznan , where he was wounded in the battle for Miłosław . On September 8, 1855 he received in the Ukraine , the ordination . In 1857 he founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary in St. Petersburg .

On January 6, 1862 he was by Pius IX. appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Warsaw and received on January 26, 1862 Archbishop Waclaw Zylinski in St. Petersburg , the episcopal ordination . In 1863 he was exiled to Yaroslavl for 20 years by the government as part of the tsarist measures against the January uprising . There he built up the Roman Catholic parish and supported other exiles.

After negotiations between the Tsarist Empire and the Holy See, he was allowed to leave Russia. On March 15, 1883 he renounced the office of Archbishop of Warsaw and was led by Leo XIII. appointed titular archbishop of Tarsus . He spent the last 12 years of his life in Galicia.

Feliński's remains were transferred to Warsaw in 1920, where they are venerated in St. John's Cathedral .

Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński was beatified on August 17, 2002 by Pope John Paul II and on October 11, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized .
