Antoni Melchior Fijałkowski (born January 3, 1778 in Zielomyśl (Zielomischel), community Pszczew (Betsche), † October 5, 1861 in Warsaw ) was Archbishop of Warsaw, patriot and a spiritual leader in divided Poland .

Life

Antoni Melchior Fijałkowski, a Polish nobleman, son of Stefan and Beata from the family "Fijałkowski". He attended the seminary in Gniezno and was ordained a priest in 1801 . During his chaplaincy he took part in a rebel army uprising. In 1811 he became a member of the cathedral chapter of Włocławek and later of Płock . On January 27, 1842 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Płock and at the same time titular bishop of Hermopolis Maior . He was consecrated on May 15, 1842. In 1844 he became Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Warsaw . Pope Pius IX confirmed on September 18, 1856 Fijałkowski's appointment as Archbishop of Warsaw. He had Tadeusz Łubieński , the auxiliary bishop in Kujawien-Kalisz , present him with the archbishop's pallium. The title “ Primate of Poland ” was denied him by the political rulers of Prussia and Russia (partition of Poland in 1795).

After the bloody suppression of the patriotic manifestations (five dead and ten wounded) on February 27, 1861 on the Warsaw Palace Square by the Russian army, Archbishop Fijałkowski protested to the governor of the tsar; it was the beginning of national patriotic manifestations. Thanks to his attitude, Fijałkowski was recognized as the leader of the nation.

Antoni Melchior Fijałkowski died on October 5, 1861 and was buried in the crypt of St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw. The funeral of the "real Primate of the Polish Kingdom" with thousands of people turned into a major patriotic demonstration (the largest before the January Uprising ) throughout Polish society. In response, the then imperial governor Lambert had to declare martial law in the Polish kingdom.
