Maria Anna of Jesus de Paredes ( Spanish Mariana de Jesús de Paredes y Flores , born October 31, 1618 in Quito ; † May 26, 1645 ibid) was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi and a mystic . She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Maria Anna of Jesus descended from noble Spanish conquerors, lost her parents at a very young age and was raised by her married sister. When she received first communion at the age of seven, she took the vow of perpetual virginity . She led a hermitic life in her sister's house , devoted exclusively to prayer, and left the house almost exclusively to receive the sacraments . At the age of 14 she vowed a life according to the evangelical councils and was accepted into the Third Order of the Franciscans on November 6, 1639 . The saint became known for her mystical experiences and prophecies. She also had the gift of discerning spirits .

Mary Anna of Jesus died on May 26, 1645 after offering herself to God as an atonement for the salvation of Quito from the plague . Her remains were found in the Jesuit Church of St. Ludwig is buried in Quito. On November 20, 1853 she was by Pope Pius IX. beatified and on June 4, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. canonized . Mary Anne of Jesus is the first saint of the Franciscan Family in Latin America. On November 30, 1945, she was declared the heroine of the fatherland by parliament. Her feast day is May 26th. She is the patron saint of Ecuador.
