" Zum golden Hirschen " is a historic pharmacy in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, at 11 Kohlmarkt .

history

The history of the pharmacy trade in Vienna goes back to the Middle Ages . In parallel with advances in medical science, pharmacists developed. The Viennese pharmacies in particular enjoyed a high reputation as early as the 17th century under Emperor Leopold I , so that doctors, pharmacists and chemists came to Vienna from many countries to study.

The pharmacy was owned by Vinzenz Hackenberger from 1435 to 1458 . The location was at ditch no. 1121 in the old historical "Hirschenhaus" from which the name of the pharmacy came.

It was known as Lasla Prokh'sches Benefiziantenhaus from 1532 and changed hands frequently. In 1612 Bartholomäus Schlezer, the former owner of the Mohrenapotheke, was the owner, then in 1650 Friedrich Müller von Löwenstein, 1687 Ignaz Greimoldt (from 1692 senior of the pharmacy), from 1722 his son Joseph Melchior Greimoldt (from 1754 senior of the pharmacy), 1762 his son Franz Xaver Greimoldt, his brother-in-law Martin Weiskampf in 1769, Jakob Augusta and Rudolf Etzelt from 1787 . Jakob August was head of the newly formed pharmacists' committee from 1796 to 1803, Rudolf Etzelt became provisional from 1831 .

When the Hirschenhaus was demolished, the pharmacy was relocated to the (old) Michaelerhaus at Kohlmarkt 1152 (today 11) in 1840, where it is still located today.

Old books show that the pharmacy was founded in 1713 by a privilege granted by Emperor Charles VI. has been confirmed. This privilege is based in turn on the privilege of Emperor Ferdinand III. , which again refers to the privileges of Emperor Rudolf II from 1602 and Emperor Ferdinand I from 1564. The interior of the pharmacy was decorated, the prescription table was admired by connoisseurs for its artistic work.

In 1869 Wenzel Twerdy took over the pharmacy. He was later elected to the Vienna City Council in 1887. Around 1900, the pharmacy “Zum golden Hirschen” had several specialties such as W. Twerdy's Zahnlatwerge ( Electuarium dentifricium ), women's powder and Kola granulée .

In 1956 the pharmacy was modernized inside and out.
