John Boste (* around 1544 in Dufton ; † June 24, 1594 in Durham ) was a Roman Catholic priest and martyr . He was the youngest son of Nicholas Boste and his wife, Janet. He attended Queens College , Oxford . He completed his studies in 1572.

In 1580, Boste left England and went to the English College in Reims with his protégé Gerard Clibborn . He was ordained a priest in 1581 and sent back to England. There he began his mission in the northern counties and Scotland. Various attempts to catch him failed.

Finally, in September 1593, he was betrayed by a renegade Catholic and arrested in Durham. From there he was transferred to Windsor, and later to the Tower of London , and his case was investigated before the Privy Council . In the summer of 1594 on his return to Durham he managed to escape together with another priest, John Ingram , and a Catholic layman, George Swallowfield , which, however, lasted only a short time. On July 24, 1594, he was charged with unauthorized entry and exit into the country and executed that same day in Durham. His two companions were executed two days later.

Boste was founded by Pope Paul VI. Canonized in 1970. He is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales . The common day of remembrance is October 25th.
