Maria Alfonsina Ghattas (born October 4, 1843 as Soultaneh Mariam Danil Ghattas in Jerusalem , † March 25, 1927 in Ein Karem near Jerusalem) was a Palestinian religious sister and mystic . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Soultaneh Mariam Danil Ghattas joined the French community of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition at the age of 14 and took the name Maria Alfonsina. In 1880, following a vision , she founded a community for young Arab women called the Rosary Sisters with the aim of religious education and literacy. To date it is the only congregation founded in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem . The community exists in eight countries in the Middle East and has around 260 sisters.

Beatification and Canonization

Maria Alfonsina Ghattas was beatified by the Catholic Church on November 22, 2009 in a service presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato , Prefect of the Congregation for Canonization , in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth . It was the first beatification by the Roman Catholic Church to take place in the Holy Land . On May 17, 2015, she was canonized by Pope Francis . Her feast day is March 25th .
