Philippine Rose Duchesne (born August 29, 1769 in Grenoble , France , † November 18, 1852 in St. Charles , Missouri ) was a French religious sister and is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Philippine Rose Duchesne entered the newly founded community of women religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1804 . There she performed various tasks and worked for several years as a personal confidante of the order's founder, Magdalena Sophie Barat . She took her vows on November 21, 1805 . For some time she headed the Society's Sacré Coeur boarding school in Grenoble . She later became Secretary General of the Society in Paris .

Following a request from the Bishop of Louisiana in May 1817, the Superior of the Congregation, Magdalena Sophie Barat, sent Phillipine Rose to the United States. In 1818 she settled with four sisters in St. Charles in the Archdiocese of New Orleans . In the following years she established several branches of her order in the United States. In North America she founded several novitiate and schools and was able to expand the congregation considerably. From 1840 she worked as a missionary with the Indians in Sugar Creek . Philippine Rose Duchesne was founded on May 12, 1940 by Pope Pius XII. Beatified , Pope John Paul II canonized her on July 3, 1988 .
