Francesco Carácciolo (born October 13, 1563 in Villa Santa Maria in Abruzzo , Italy , † June 4, 1608 in Argenta ) is a co-founder of a Christian male order and was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francesco Carácciolo came from the Neapolitan noble family Caracciolo . He miraculously recovered from a serious skin condition and gave away all of his possessions. He studied Catholic theology and received the sacrament of ordination in 1587 . It joined a community of priests who endeavored to provide spiritual care for galley slaves and people sentenced to death . During the time of the Counter Reformation , he and others founded the Order of Minor Regular Clerics in 1588 in order to be able to better coordinate the upcoming tasks through the structural order of a congregation. In the same year Pope Sixtus V confirmed the community. The first general of the order was Agostino Adorno in 1588 , the second general was Franz von Carácciolo in 1593.

Francesco Carácciolo undertook numerous pastoral trips to the Iberian Peninsula and thereby ensured the continuous expansion of his order. He died in Argenta on June 4, 1608 and was buried in Naples . Pope Pius VII canonized him on May 24, 1807 . Franz von Carácciolo is venerated as the patron saint of Naples.

In the chapel of the Palazzo Cellamare in Naples there is a painting that is said to have been made during Francesco Carácciolo's lifetime. There are other well-known representations in the treasure chapel of the Church of San Gennaro in Naples and in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome .
