Jan Berchmans

Jan Berchmans (born March 13, 1599 in Diest ( Brabant ), † August 13, 1621 in Rome ) was a Jesuit . He is patron of the student youth and together with Aloysius Gonzaga and Stanislaus Kostka also the patron saint of youth in general.

Life

Jan Berchmans joined the Jesuit order of the Flemish order province of Mechelen in 1616 . In order to complete his studies, he was sent to the Roman College, at that time the largest and best college of the Jesuit order, which had more than 2000 students. In the summer of 1621 he finished the three-year course in philosophy. Shortly afterwards he died of complications from pneumonia.

His preserved records are marked by deep piety and the effort to be completely faithful in community life.

Canonization and devotion

Jan Berchmans was born in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. canonized. His body was buried in Sant'Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio in Rome, his heart is kept as a precious relic in the church of the Jesuit College in Leuven .

Dedications

The church of St-Jean-Berchmans (Brussels) , the St. Johannes Berchmans College in Leuven , in whose church his heart is buried, and the Berchmans College in Pullach , the predecessor institution of the Munich School of Philosophy, were named after Berchmans .
