Philipp Benizi (de Damiani) OSM also Filippo Benizi and Philippus Benitius (born August 15, 1233 in Florence , † August 22, 1285 in Todi , Italy ) was the fifth superior general of the Servites . After the seven holy founders of the Servite Order , he is considered the "second founder" and innovator of the order. He revised the rules of the order and called the female branch, the Servites, into being. He is the patron saint of the Servites and was canonized on April 12, 1671 by Pope Clement X (1670–1676), well before the "Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order" .

Early years

Philipp Benizi came from the respected Florentine Benizi family. He studied medicine and philosophy in Padua and Paris . In 1254 he joined the Servite Order and was ordained a priest in 1259 . He took care of the poor and sick from an early age. On June 5, 1267, he was elected Superior General of the Servites. St. Juliana von Falconieri , a niece of St. Alexis Falconieri , received the habit of the third order of the Servites from Philipp Benizi , she was the founder of the order of the Servites . Immediately after his death on August 22, 1285, the deceased general superior began to be worshiped. This worship is supported by a healing miracle. He was canonized in 1671 and his relic is kept in the Servite Church in Todi.

The Savior of the Order

Since taking office, Philipp Benizi had contributed to the expansion of the order, so there were provinces not only in Italy, but also in Poland and Hungary . Pope Innocent V (1276), a Dominican , forbade the formation of novices . It appeared that the Servites were about to become extinct and their inheritance would be given to the Holy See . The new Superior General Philip resisted with all means at his disposal. Pope Honorius IV. (1285–1287) placed the Servites under his papal protection again, the new beginning was assured. The survival and reconstruction is attributed to Philipp Benizi and led to him being named the "Second Founder of the Servites".

Escape from election of the Pope

In the conclave from 1268 to 1271, which lasted more than two years , Philipp Benizi, as superior general, was asked to mediate on the cardinals who held the conclave in Viterbo , as they could not agree on a new pope. During this mission, he became a candidate for the Pope himself. According to tradition, Benizi is said to have hid in Bagni San Filippo until the election of Pope Gregory X. (1271–1276) was completed. This incident is reflected in the representations of his person, he is shown in the vestments of the Servites with a book and a halo . At his feet lies or stands the tiara , which is to symbolize the refusal to elect the Pope .
